After finishing 66th last year with a time of 11:25 as a seventh grader, Summit Hill Junior High’s Gerry Cushing had his eyes set on something special on October 13th at this year’s IESA cross country 3A state championship in Normal, Illinois. Gerry was mired in the middle of the pack after the first mile, but he would change that in the second half of the race. With 50 meters to go, he turned on the afterburners and passed six other runners en route to a 23rd place finish, making him Summit Hill’s first male runner to medal at state since 2003. His time of 10:58 is the best ever for a Spartan runner at the state championship. To say Gerry has a bright future as he moves on to high school next year would be an understatement.
