Dr. Julian Rogus School
Mission - Rogus School Mission is to educate children in a nurturing environment.
Vision - Rogus School vision is to create a community where children are loved for who they are and challenged to aim high.
Values - We value Acceptance, Belonging, and Community.

Dear DJR Families and Staff, I so much appreciate being a part of the Dr. Julian Rogus School community at this challenging time. Our common interest in keeping each part of our school community healthy and strong is reassuring to me and hope to all of you. As this time continues I will be working to support our Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten/Early Childhood programs. I will be updating my teacher page more frequently during this time to include information that may be of interest, support or inspiration to teachers and families. I realize there are so many changing and moving parts to our lives as we manage these difficult days. My offerings are in the hope that they have some positive impact on the school community. Take care of yourself, your family and your friends. DJR Kindness Matters! Sincerely, Kathi Cheverud, School Psychologist, Pre K, Early Childhood, Kindergarten

PRACTICE SELF-COMPASSION

This situation is new to all of us. No one knows all of the answers. We need to have realistic expectations for ourselves in this strange time.
  • Forgive yourself for making mistakes
  • Accept that you won’t have all the answers
  • Remind yourself you’re doing your best

ENCOURAGE OPEN CONVERSATION
You may not feel like you have all the answers, but it’s important to encourage children to ask questions. Here’s how:
  • Model calm behavior while providing information in a developmentally appropriate way
  • Provide reassurance, empathy and encouragement in the face of uncertainty.
  • For example, "I know things are different, but we will get through it together.

USE ATTENTION TO MANAGE BEHAVIOR
Kids will naturally crave attention while stuck at home all day. Parents can give attention thoughtfully to encourage good behavior:
  • Give generous praise for being flexible.
  • “Actively ignore" (don't acknowledge) minor problem behavior.
  • Use time together as a motivator: “We can play a game if you do your schoolwork while I take this call.”

HOW TO SOOTHE AN ANXIOUS CHILD

Your child may be feeling more anxious these days. Help them understand and manage their feelings by:
  • Labeling emotions and their intensity
  • Asking "yes" or "no" questions about their feelings
  • Creating daily routines that include exercise
  • Modeling calmness and mindfulness

BE AWARE OF ANXIETY SIGNS

Children express anxiety in ways that are not always clear to adults. Here are some different ways your child might express anxiety:
  • Reassurance-seeking
  • Fear of separation from parents
  • Headaches or stomach aches
  • Irritability
  • Trouble sleeping

LIMIT THE NEWS

Creating a secure home environment is important for healthy coping. Too much news is not a good thing.
  • Limit access to what may feel like scary and confusing information for kids.
  • At the same time, kids shouldn’t be left in the dark
  • Model calm responses while explaining and answering questions in a developmentally appropriate way.
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!
This year I am again working with the Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten/Early Childhood programs at Dr. Julian Rogus School.  It is rewarding to be part of a team that supports our youngest learners and fun filled too!
Something to share........This year the National Association of School Psychologists has adopted the theme:
"Find Your Focus!"
Finding your focus can mean a variety of meanings from paying attention, to being able to see an idea more clearly, to identifying an area of interest, or to being persistent or determined in one’s effort. Focusing can help us set goals, identify action steps, communicate need, and engage in discussions to help create the connections necessary for students to develop critical academic and social emotional skills.
This year at Dr. Julian Rogus School administration and staff are using data to identify skill "targets" for students to aim for.  By working together, students and staff are living the theme of "Find Your Focus"!
