English unites us, but all languages are American!

ESL means English as a Second Language.
ELL means English Language Learner.

Sometimes a family speaks a first language that is different than English. This does not in any way mean that a student is less able than their peers. Our job is support these students so that there is no language barrier holding them back from success.

F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions):

1. My child speaks English well. Why does he/she need ESL help?

Students will sometimes need support with their academic language. This language is usually more complicated than the conversational language we use everyday.

2. What can I do to help my child?

Speak, read, and encourage them to use your first language as much as possible if that's what you know best. Your child will build a firm foundation in that language. The transition to English will then become easier.

3. How does a child qualify for ESL?

If another language is spoken at home, the student will be assessed. Based on this assessment
and teacher recommendation, the student will receive ESL support.

4. What do you do to help an ESL student?

The classroom and ESL teachers collaborate in order to determine areas in which the student needs support.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns!

Remember to read to your child every night!
