Dear Parents,

Wow!  Where is September going?  We have been busy learning so many new things and the time is going by so quickly.

Our story next week is Gus Takes the Train.

Our Spelling Words are: up    bug    mud    nut    hug   tub    cub    rug    shut   snug

Our High Frequency Words are:  friend     full     good    hold     many     pull

The children have been doing an awesome job with reading words and spelling words.  Keep up the great work!  We will have our first reading theme test after the story Gus Takes the Train.   This will be a summative assessment.  I will provide a study sheet before this test is given.  I plan on giving this assessment on October 2nd or 3rd.

The children have been doing so well in math.  Once they learn both addition and subtraction it is hard for them to remember to look at the sign to tell if you should add or subtract.  I just wanted you to be aware of this so you can reinforce it when you are practicing at home.  Please remember to discourage your child from adding or subtracting with their fingers.  This is so important!  You can use any small objects (pennies, buttons, crayons, etc.), touch math, and/or drawing sticks/dots/circles to help if needed.  (* I know,  I sound like a broken record-Oh wait, a broken CD :))

We have been working a lot with writing sentences.  I will be looking for the children to apply capitalization and punctuation when writing now.  On many assignments children are still allowed to use their own spelling.  Later in the year we will move toward correct spelling. We are also learning about nouns, verbs and adjectives.  The children are already showing signs of being great writers!

A new skill in reading this week was alphabetical (ABC) order.  The children seem to have picked this up pretty easily. We will continue to develop this skill as the school year progresses.

In Social Studies, we will be learning about Johnny Appleseed and doing some apple related activities.  I am asking each child to please bring in an apple, any color will do.  We will start using our apples on Tuesday.  I hope everyone will be able to participate.  We will eat our apples when we are done with our activities!  Yummy!!

STAR test results were sent home on Friday.  After reading them over, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.  Some children took their time on these tests while others rushed through way too quickly.  If you have questions about how long your child took to complete a test please let me know.  I will look it up and send you the information.  Overall, the children worked hard trying to do their best.  They make me proud!

October is just around the corner.  In October we will start a reading incentive program sponsored by Pizza Hut called Book It!.  We will also start having Special Readers in October. We can’t wait! I will be sending more information about both of these programs soon.

As always, thank you for your support and encouragement!!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Joyce Chakos :)
