Speech and Language Therapy Information Welcome new and returning Frankfort Square families to the 2019-2020 school year. My name is Amanda Sabo, and I am the Speech-Language Pathologist that will be working with the students at Frankfort Square School. This is my sixth year at Frankfort Square, and also my seventh year in District #161. In addition to the students at Frankfort Square, this will be my fifth year providing services for the Pre-K, walk-in speech-only kiddos. Therapist Information: Although, this is my seventh year working in District #161, I have worked as a Licensed Speech-Language Pathologist for the past 14 years within the school setting; with children ranging from preschool to eighth grade. I also have 3 children of my own, an 11-year-old, an 8-year-old, and a 5 year-old, that all currently receive speech-language services to address their own speech and language deficits. With that in mind, I am always researching new ways to deliver therapy to my children and students. I very excited to be back at FFS School this year and work with any students that I had last school year, as well as, any new students entering. I am thrilled to be back, and a part of the FFS family for another awesome school year! Therapy Procedures: Based on the information in your child’s IEP, he/she will be scheduled to attend therapy on a weekly basis. Most students are seen in small groups; however, some are seen on a one-on-one basis or as a large group. I will be working closely with your child’s teacher to plan as needed, as to what will work best for your child. I also love receiving any information and feedback from parents and/or care givers.

Carry-over Activities

Carry-over activities:
• Homework: Completing homework sent home by a therapist is a great way to spend structured time practicing a skill. Oftentimes, this homework will include words or sentences with target sounds for children working on articulation. Homework may include writing prompts for older clients, or worksheets to practice goals outside of therapy.
• Book reading: Books can be a great way to increase carryover. For children working on language goals, possibly including sentence structure, wh-questions, sequencing, auditory comprehension and a variety of other goals, SLPs may recommend that parents simply read to their children. During book time, parents will be encouraged to stop frequently and ask children questions about characters, events, etc. This can help children improve their language skills and be a fun activity for parents and children!
• Craft projects: Parents can use craft projects to increase carryover outside of the therapy room. Working on crafts can help target following directions, appropriate sentence structure, as well as focus on a specific theme to increase vocabulary.
• Modeling: Parents simply modeling their own appropriate speech and language for children can help children work toward their goals. If parents, for example, practice using a slow rate, children will learn to copy their parents’ rate of speech which may increase intelligibility.
• Recasting: Parents can recast their child’s utterance by correcting and emphasizing changes for any errors noted. For example, if a child says, “he walking,” parents can recast by saying, “You’re right! He IS walking.”
Helping children with carryover outside of therapy will help progress through goals in therapy. Frequently working on target words/sounds and other areas throughout the week will help children improve faster and meet their goals!
