Two SHSD161 staff members earn ISBE awards

Two Summit Hill School District 161 staff members have earned awards in the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) 2025 Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards.

Summit Hill Junior High Associate Principal Monica Laux and Dr. Julian Rogus School Targeted Instruction (TIP) Teacher Meaghan Gallagher were recognized for their work in our schools and the impact they make on students and their fellow staff members every day.

“Congratulations to Mrs. Monica Laux and Miss Meaghan Gallagher for being recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education for their contributions to the staff, students, and learning community of our Summit Hill School District,” said Superintendent Dr. Paul McDermott.

Laux, who received an Award of Special Recognition in the School Administrator category, is in her second year of working in SHSD161.

“Hired here just two years ago, Mrs. Laux’s experience and knowledge have made an impact for so many that she comes into contact with on a daily basis. We couldn't be happier for her and celebrate along with her on her award,” said McDermott.

Gallagher, who is in her third year of teaching in our district, earned an Award of Meritorious Service in the Classroom Teacher category.

“In her three years here, Miss Gallagher has initiated many new ideas, always going above and beyond, not only for her students but also for her colleagues. Not only is she kind, caring, and positive, but she is also a proud Summit Hill graduate, and we are very happy she found her way back to our district,” said McDermott.

ISBE received a record number of nominations and applications for the 2025 Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year Awards, and honored more than 500 educators, administrators, and other school staff for their dedication, innovation, and impact in schools across Illinois. ISBE presents awards in seven categories: classroom teachers, early career educators (teachers with one to four years of experience), school administrators, student support personnel, educational service personnel, community volunteers, and teams. A committee of administrators, teachers, educational service personnel, student support personnel, and past Illinois Teachers of the Year reviewed applications and selected this year's awardees.
