Reading Choice Board

1643732801Readingskillschoiceboard.docx
This choice board provides access to learning opportunities to support our students who received reading intervention this year.

This week in class

MON

  • Enjoy some fresh air today despite the colder weather and play a rhyming game outdoors. Use sidewalk chalk to write a simple word such as cat. Ask your child for a word that rhymes with cat. Write the new word as well. Challenge your child to write as many rhyming words as they can can by simply changing the beginning sound. Switch up words after a while to keep your child's interest.
  • Wilson Fundations letter review lesson (sent by email to parents of students using this intervention).
  • Remember to practice Lexia for 10-15 minutes a day.

TUES

  • Try to encourage children to write often. Just a simple sentence or two would be great. If your child would like to write a note to tell me about something he or she has been doing while we are away from school, take a snapshot of the note and I will write back. This week's writing idea: Favorite family vacation. Feel free to include a photo with your writing if you would like.
  • Remember to login to Lexia Core5 Reading for a few minutes every day

WEDS

  • Have you had a chance to use your Lexia account today?
  • Check out the Spring Break Ideas for Reading Intervention Students assignment. This reading choice board was sent home prior to our school closure but it has been updated and provides great skill review and some learning activities when your child is looking for a challenge.
  • Outdoor activity of the day: Play letter/word catch. Toss a ball to your child while saying a letter of the alphabet. As your child catches the ball and prepares to throw it back to you, ask them to give you a word that starts with that letter. Repeat with all letters of the alphabet.

THURS

  • Remember to login to the Lexia Core5 Reading website to build literacy skills. It is free and designed to meet your child's literacy needs. Try to aim for 60 minutes/week but you're always welcome to exceed the goal.
  • There is a new Flipgrid from the reading specialists and a few teachers from Rogus. It is a great way for teachers and students to share our favorite stories and stay in touch. We miss you!        https://flipgrid.com/ruklic0883

FRI

  • Remember to use your Lexia account today. It is a great way to practice the skills that will get you ready for the next grade.
  • Read for 15-20 minutes each day. Feel free to email me a great book your child has read recently or that you have read together and I will write a note back to him or her.
  • Happy Friday! Have a terrific weekend!

Newsletter

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! My name is Jamie McClellan and I am one of the building reading specialists. I am working with both kindergarten and first grade this year. Kindergarten is a pivotal year in your child's education as he or she will learn the letters of the alphabet, letter sounds, sight words, and other early literacy skills. These skills will build the foundation for a lifetime love of reading. I am looking forward to working with your child this year.
First grade is the year where all of the foundational skills taught in kindergarten get put into action to help students become independent readers and writers. One such program that I participate in this year is Reading Recovery. We are fortunate to have Reading Recovery as an intervention program in our school to support our student literacy achievement. Reading Recovery is a highly effective short-term intervention of one-to-one tutoring for first graders because it delivers a program that customized to meet individual student needs. The growth and excitement students experience as they improve their reading and writing is exceptionally rewarding.
